Hey everyone. It’s your boi Shawn Broom. Check out my TEDx talk. It really gets into the heart of why the show exists.

The Story of U Podcast is a Regina, Saskatchewan based show dedicated to sharing the stories of average, everyday people. I hate to use the word “average” to describe our guests because, as I’ve learned in the course of doing the show, everyone has an interesting story to tell. People are fascinating. I’ve always thought this but it really sunk in after I began my career as a massage therapist. Everyday i’d spend hours talking to and getting to know my clients. I found each of them so interesting. Each one had a unique story that was so genuinely, personally their own, and I loved every second of hearing them. There is a term from “The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows” known as Sonder. It is defined as

n. the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own—populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries and inherited craziness—an epic story that continues invisibly around you like an anthill sprawling deep underground, with elaborate passageways to thousands of other lives that you’ll never know existed, in which you might appear only once, as an extra sipping coffee in the background, as a blur of traffic passing on the highway, as a lighted window at dusk.”
In writing this I’m just now realising how close to home that hits. Our goal on The Story of U Podcast is to reach out and shine a light on these stories. To take a brief look into someones life in an effort to forge a connection between those sprawling anthills. To give people the opportunity to be more than just a blur of traffic passing on the highway and allow them to stop and get to know someone new. To put it simply, we want to bring people together.
The thing I love the most about the show is that I get to meet new people every week and over the span of 60-90 minutes, get a crash course on their life. Their triumphs and tragedies. Their journey that brought them to where they are today. The amazing thing about getting to do that is you realize that while each story is distinctly unique to the individual, they’re all basically the same at their core. Doesn’t matter if you’re from Regina, The United Arab Emirates, adopted, born with no arms or transgender. It all boils down to the same human experience. And I want to hear about them all because I love the shading and coloring that goes over each story. Thanks for joining us. I hope you enjoy the show!
